Palm Hearts and Crosses
One of our Sandgate Mens Shed members has created these unique pieces, which are handmade in the shed and take up to four hours to complete. below he reflects on their creation...
"The Palm Hearts and crosses I make are intended as an expression of love towards a person who is struggling with the ups and downs that life brings, given by someone who cares about the wellbeing of a friend or family member.
I made my first heart for a family member who was diagnosed with Cancer during COVID lockdown, which made my ability to visit impossible. My wife delivered the heart to them when able and it never left their side during treatment and recovery. It still sits on her coffee table to this day as a reminder of the love expressed by family during that period.
I took notice of this reaction to a simple gift and thought to myself that others may benefit as well and so the heart making began.
The hearts I make can be seen as a metaphor for the human condition. We all have scars, suffered broken hearts, have holes in our hearts where a loved one has left us early and so I look for timber that is twisty, knotted or scarred and carve and polish them to reflect the beauty that all our hearts radiate, regardless of their condition."
These items are available for purchase at Sandgate Mens Shed.
